Keep Maine Local

Corporate greed continues to flood Maine, but learn how you can help.

Good morning Cannafam, I’m here again with a little more of an informative post.

Corporate Maine began long ago with restaurant chains, gas stations chains, internet companies, etc. However, Maine had still kept up enough of a craft market with breweries, wineries, locally owned and operated stores, and especially with cannabis. Sadly though, that is all about to change.

You may be familiar with the dispensary chain Wellness Connection. They have various locations throughout Maine and even have a sister company, High North Cannabis. I personally first heard of WC a few years ago when medical marijuana had just became legal in the state, and noticed their stores appearing.

I have in fact purchased from WC a long time ago, as it was incredible easy to purchase from them with a medical card. After trying their products, I realized that the flower I had be getting on the streets blew this dispensary quality out of the water, and I found myself focusing more on the local caregivers and dispensaries that offered local quality.

Fast forward to June 19th 2020, I found myself standing outside of the WC location in Portland due to the recent negative changes WC is trying to implement into our state’s MP policies. In May, Maine officials passed a law officially stating that you no longer have to be a Maine resident in order to own/operate a recreational dispensary or delivery service in Maine. This is a huge setback and let down to local caregivers and farmers who put in YEARS of hard work and dedication to make the program specific for Maine residents only, but allowing out of state patients to also purchase medicinal product. Although this is affecting recreational, it’s only a matter of time before this does affect our medicinal rights as farmers or caregivers.

Wellness Connection is 49% owned by a Delaware investment company. They’re not a fully Mainer owned business but want to expand the residency restrictions in Maine to allow other corporate and greedy investors and companies to build their empires in Maine.

Mainers don’t want that.

We VOTED on the commercial sales of marijuana in 2016 to RESTRICT outside residents from dispensing here. All of that hard work to establish these policies as such, only for them to bulldozed over by corporate greed.

That’s a big f*** you to local farmers and caregivers, but how can I help?

Shop Local!

Keep your local farmers and caregivers in business! If this were to pass for medicinal, there is no way our Maine farmers are going to be able to compete with the dumb-low (but also very low quality) prices, forcing them to have to eventually go out of business because they won’t be able to afford to keep their companies afloat. Then, the corporate junkies will raise the price on that same low quality bud to us Mainers. Do you want that?!

I sure the hell hope not. You buy local beer, so buy local weed too! Keep your local Mainers in business!

Also, use your biggest power: voice.

Write to the Maine legislators, attend protests, make your friends and family aware of what’s happening. We don’t want to go to a Walmart type company to shop for our medicine!

Do the right thing, y’all. Our future is in your hands.
