A Year In Review

2020 was one for the books, but a lot of great things happened this year too.

Hello folks! Welcome back to my blog. I have clearly taken a bit of a writing hiatus, as the holiday season is a busy time for ya girl. Now that they’re over, let’s get back to work.

What a year. 2020 was not everyone’s ideal year. We as a society had to deal with a viral disease that has changed the way day-to-day life goes. Due to the pandemic, we had an economic downfall for our locally owned business throughout the country. Many folks have lost their business, their job, their home, etc. Personally, the business I had worked at before was impacted dramatically and immediately.

Before diving into the cannabis industry, I worked as a tasting bar server at a winery in Portland. Unfortunately, that business is no longer here in Portland (luckily, the home base of the company is in Lincolnville and is still chugging away) and so I had lost my job pretty quick. Luckily, the fine folks at Zero Gravity offered me a job not long after that loss, so ya girl was on her feet again in no time. They took me in and gave me a great position that I’m still at today.

If I’m being honest with y’all, I was ready for a change. I was ready to do something different. Back in March, I went to Florida (half the trip was no pandemic, second half pandemic began) to visit a great friend of mine in the Daytona Beach area. I had mentioned to her that I was lowkey interested in making reviews on cannabis. I enjoyed using it, found her medicinal benefits to be helpful in my own ways, and with that wine tasting background, I felt confident on how to describe products. My lovely friend encouraged me to start doing that and that I may never have this feeling again.

So I fucking did it.

It’s been a blast trying and talking about products, as well as some other fun stuff here and there. Thanks to this motive, I’ve tried lots of different strains and concentrates, and curated my own little list for myself to look back on and see what I was digging then.

Let’s start with flower. Here were my top favorite strains I tried within 2020, in no particular order:

  • Cherry Ghostenade by Zero Gravity Cannabis. This was easily one of the most potent strains I personally came across. Incredibly flavorful with lots of cherry and citrus, with an incredibly sedating Indica high to follow.

  • San Fernando Valley OG by Other Level Gardens. Also very potent, this flower gave me a strong style of high that made me giggly and sleepy in all the right ways. Her smell was very pungent, with lots of skunkiness.

  • Grease Monkey by The Maine Dankery. Now I only had so much of this strain, but that little bit made a huge impact. Gassy, sedating, and strong. I was always tied to my couch after enjoying and had some of the best nights sleep.

Now let’s do the concentrates, again in no particular order:

  • GMO Hash Rosin by Other Level Labs. The most pungent dabs I’ve personally come across. I really only needed one hit of this gram most of the time because she was so potent for me. 10/10.

  • Outlaw Hash Rosin by Brigid Labs. Another pungent gram, she was also very strong on the fuel/gassy terps, as well as having a beautifully relaxing indica high to follow.

  • Thug Royale x Fluffahnutter x Sherb Sugar by Curated Cannabis Co. Big blend, powerful results. This gram really stood out to me on her potency, aromas, and high it gave. Such a great stoned sensation afterwards, I would feel like I would be on cloud 9. I miss that stuff.

These were simply my highlight smokes of the year, as ya girl came across an array of strains from cultivators from all over Maine. There were some names I haven’t tried (I.e. Salty Cultivation, Mega Raw Melts, Newton’s Nursery, and many others), and we’re going to definitely plan on diving into the creations from these folks and more in 2021.

This past year, I really wanted to get in the delivery biz. I wanted to get my foot in the door in my own way, but as this current year began I’ve decided I need to accomplish some smaller goals, to then begin what I truly want to accomplish in the future.

Instead, I want to take 2021 to improve who I am in the garden. I want to learn the plant more, understand her, and see the true power of her in front of my eyes. This is not a gift that is taught easily, but simply takes time and patience to embrace who she and what she has to offer. I’m ready to broaden my senses to the nature of the cannabis plant.

In the meantime, I’m going to take 2021 to also further my education in a different, yet still beneficial to this industry, type of career. Details to come when it’s time.

Also in the meantime, ya girl is going to take time to perfect her photography and further understand the power of photo-editing software. Photoshop’s capabilities are no joke y’all, but hey I’ll get there. I am accepting photo clients for any smaller caregivers who want photos of their babies!

The last other thing I wanted to fully mention was the blessing of Cidney coming into my life. For those who don’t know, Cidney is the wonderful woman in my life. My rock, my best friend, but most importantly my love. I was lucky enough to meet her last January (coming up on a year actually) and we have not gone a day without talking since that day.

I’m not one to really talk about my love life, but she deserves some shine. She has helped encourage me through a lot of challenging times, held my hand during the stressful times, and was the one smiling back at me during the amazing times. She’s a special girl y’all, and I’m special for being able to call her mine.

So even despite the chaos of COVID, politics, and just regular bullshit, ya girl had a pretty great year and I’m thankful. I’m eager to see what this next year brings, but I’m hopeful and inspired. Let’s fucking get it y’all!

Oh hey by the way, important message here. The Maine Office of Marijuana Policy recently released their new draft of their preliminary draft rules for the Medical Marijuana Program. If you haven’t read yourself or seen on Instagram already, these “rules” do not favor locally owned business or the caregivers, who are the backbone of the agricultural industry. They’ve decided to shape these rules not only after the adult-use rules, but to favor out of state investors instead. This is a MEDICAL program. These rules will make it difficult for patients like you and me to purchase our medicine, and make it harder and harder for our farmers to cultivate our medicine. You CAN help though. Head to the draft rules on OMP’s website, read the rules, and submit your feedback from now until Sunday January 10th at 5:00 pm. The future of our medical program is at stake y’all, so this is our time to fight back.

All that being said, I do hope y’all take care and enjoy your January. Don’t forget to smoke locally grown cannabis only!

Cheers,
